What Is BOTOX®?

Before and after BOTOX®

Botulinum toxin is a byproduct of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, and it has a paralytic effect on human muscles. When administered directly to targeted muscles in small, controlled doses in clinical settings, however, this toxin can restrict certain facial movements and prevent wrinkles from appearing. To make things even better, the treatment will also prevent new wrinkles from forming by minimizing how much the targeted muscles can affect the skin. The patient will be able to cease receiving BOTOX® treatments at any time without any side effects other than the reappearance of their wrinkles. The results of BOTOX® treatment typically take five to ten days to show completely, and they can last for as long as six months. The patient will be able to receive touch-up treatments as needed to preserve their results.

Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX®?

BOTOX® can be an excellent way for almost anyone in their late twenties or older to prevent or reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A few issues the treatment can address include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Lines at the corners of the mouth

The Benefits of BOTOX®

BOTOX® can deliver a range of impressive benefits such as:

  • Quick treatment times: BOTOX® sessions are sometimes called “lunchtime facelifts” since they typically only take twenty minutes to an hour.
  • Tastefully subtle effects: The effects of BOTOX® are striking but difficult to pinpoint, so you won’t have to worry about looking like you have had excessive cosmetic work done after the procedure.
  • Non-surgical procedure: This minimally invasive treatment will not require any lengthy recovery period.
  • Long-lasting results: The treatment will reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for between three and six months, and retreatments are perfectly safe.
  • Cost-effective: BOTOX® can be a much more affordable option than cosmetic surgery.

BOTOX® FAQs

Is BOTOX® Permanent?

BOTOX® injections can be a simple and effective way to preserve a younger looking smile, but unfortunately, the effects are temporary. This medication is made from a purified protein derived from the neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and though it can take a few months, your body eventually metabolizes the active ingredient that makes this treatment effective.

Because of this, the results of BOTOX® injections are not permanent, so many patients schedule regular follow-ups to enhance their appearance over time.

Is BOTOX® Safe?

It’s natural to wonder whether this treatment is considered safe, especially when the active ingredient can be incredibly harmful and potentially fatal in large enough doses. Botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve signals that tell muscles when to contract or release, and can cause paralysis or respiratory failure if you’re overexposed.

But rest assured, only a small, safe dosage is included in injectables. This is enough to prevent muscle contractions at the site, which allows your skin to relax and smooth out, without damaging your oral or overall health.

With that said, BOTOX® might not be recommended for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, are allergic to the ingredients, have a skin infection, or are taking certain prescription medications because of potentially adverse interactions.

What Happens if I Stop BOTOX® Injections?

Some patients worry that if they stop their regular BOTOX® injections, their facial lines will worsen, but this isn’t entirely true. Your wrinkles will indeed return as the muscles begin contracting regularly again, but it often happens more slowly the longer you’ve been receiving injections.

That means even if you stop getting regular treatments, your face will still look younger than if you have never received the injections. And thankfully, there are no significant changes to your health if you stop or restart BOTOX®, so you can take a break when you need or want to and resume procedures another time.

How Can I Help Preserve My BOTOX® Results?

The results of your recent BOTOX® injections fade over time as your body gradually metabolizes the active protein, meaning that they’re not permanent. But you can help preserve them by:

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure. The ultraviolet rays of the sun cause an inflammatory response in your skin that breaks down the cells that make these injections effective.
  • Adjust your exercise plan. High-intensity activities that raise your metabolic rate can shorten the lifespan of the results, which can be avoided by sticking to low-to-moderate training routines instead.
  • Reduce stress levels. Stress triggers pressure in the muscles treated with the injections, reducing the longevity of the results.
  • Moisturize your skin. Lotions containing collagen and hyaluronic acid can help keep your skin plump and healthy and slow the breakdown of BOTOX® in your muscles.
