Your card
Reading your Aetna card
Aetna dental coverage usually comes through an employer, and the card is often combined with medical. These are the details the front desk will ask for:
- Member ID, and the subscriber's name if the plan is through a spouse or parent
- Group number, which tells us which employer plan you're on
- The plan or network name printed on the card, such as a dental PPO
- The phone number on the back, which we may call to verify benefits
Plan types
PPO and DMO plans are not the same
Aetna offers different kinds of dental plans. Dental PPO plans let you see any dentist and pay less when that dentist is in network, which we are. Aetna's managed care plans, often called DMO plans, work differently: they usually ask you to choose a primary dentist from their list and can have different rules.
If your card says DMO, or you're not sure what kind of plan you have, call us before booking. We'll check how your plan works with our office and tell you plainly.
Coverage
Getting the most from an Aetna PPO plan
Most dental PPO plans cover preventive care, like exams, cleanings and routine x-rays, at a high level, and cover fillings and major work at lower percentages after a deductible. Your plan also has a yearly maximum, the most it will pay in a benefit year.
If you need several treatments, timing can matter. We can show you how the work could be split across benefit years so more of it falls under your coverage, and we'll put each step's expected cost in writing.
Coverage details are typical examples, not a guarantee. Your plan documents and our verification are what count.
How we verify
What happens after you send your details
- We contact Aetna (or check its provider portal) to confirm your plan is active and in network with us.
- We note your coverage levels, deductible, what's left of your yearly maximum, and any waiting periods.
- The front desk calls you back with what your first visit should cost.
- If you need treatment, you get a written estimate before anything starts.
